What is Olive Oil?
Chemically, Olive Oil (INCI name: Olea Europaea Fruit Oil) is a plant- or seed-derived oil. Rich in oleic acid, which can disrupt the skin barrier in some people. Rated around 2 but its high oleic content makes it a common trigger for congestion.
You may see it on labels as Olive Oil, Olive, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, Olea Europaea, so it can hide under more than one name in an ingredient list.
Where Olive Oil shows up
Olive Oil is commonly formulated into facial oils, cleansing balms, moisturisers, hair products, and many products marketed as natural. Separately from clogging, its irritancy is rated 0/5 โ low, so it's unlikely to sting or sensitise on its own.
Is Olive Oil bad for acne-prone skin?
That low score makes Olive Oil a reasonable choice even for acne-prone skin. As always, individual reactions vary, but it is not a likely cause of clogged pores.
Note for fungal-acne (malassezia) sufferers: Olive Oil is commonly avoided in fungal-acne routines, since it falls into the fatty-acid or ester families the yeast can feed on. The evidence there is looser than for comedogenicity โ see our fungal-acne checker for context.
