What is Oleth-3?
Oleth-3 falls into the emulsifier category โ an emulsifier that helps oil and water mix. A low-ethoxylate oleth emulsifier rated as high as 5 on classic lists, though some newer references place it around 3.
You may see it on labels as Oleth-3, Oleth 3, so it can hide under more than one name in an ingredient list.
Where Oleth-3 shows up
As an emulsifier that helps oil and water mix, Oleth-3 typically appears in almost any lotion or cream, where it keeps the oil and water phases blended. Separately from clogging, its irritancy is rated 2/5 โ low, so it's unlikely to sting or sensitise on its own.
Is Oleth-3 bad for acne-prone skin?
For breakout-prone skin, a rating this high is a genuine flag. What matters most is where Oleth-3 sits on the label: near the top it's a real consideration, near the bottom it's usually a trace amount.
Worth flagging: Oleth-3's rating is disputed. Credible sources land on different numbers, which is why we show a range rather than a single score โ and why your own experience is the best tiebreaker.
Note for fungal-acne (malassezia) sufferers: Oleth-3 is commonly avoided in fungal-acne routines, since it falls into the fatty-acid or ester families the yeast can feed on. The evidence there is looser than for comedogenicity โ see our fungal-acne checker for context.
